Cardioversion

For many people live heart rhythm disorders like atrial fibrillation medications alone will not be able to convert the abnormal rhythm into a regular normal heartbeat. For such people, a procedure called cardioversion or electrical cardioversion may be necessary. During the cardioversion, after appropriate sedation, a machine with defibrillator pads is used to send electrical energy to the heart muscle to restore normal rhythm, allowing the heart to pump more effectively.
